Last season for Tottenham began with the status of Europa League winner and UEFA Super Cup participant. The club's high ambitions were underscored by appointing Thomas Frank as head coach, who had proven himself after seven years at Brentford. Unfortunately, the Spurs not only failed to improve their level of play on the way to the pinnacle of English football. Tottenham, by the end of the last season, were fighting a direct battle with West Ham United for Premier League survival. The catastrophic drop in the team's level led to Frank's dismissal, and on March 31 of the current year Roberto De Zerbi, who had previously worked with Marcel, was appointed to the post. Acknowledging saving themselves from relegation as a success, Tottenham's management is carrying out transfer activity that can only be compared with what Liverpool and Chelsea have been doing in recent years. To date, the London club has invested 354 million euros in new players, and with the loan of Omar Marmoush, which includes a mandatory purchase clause, the total exceeds 400 million. In addition to the Egyptian, the Spurs squad was bolstered by Sandro Tonali, Matheus Fernandes, Savinho and Van Hecke. Andrew Robertson from Liverpool and Marcos Senesi from Bournemouth were signed on a free transfer. Tottenham fans awaited the start of the season with bated breath and the performance of the team's star newcomers. In practice, they received yet another blow. In the first round of the Premier League, the Spurs lost to Brentford 0-3. On the one hand, the Bees are more cohesive as they did not undergo any transfer upheavals. On the other hand, they are mid-table, and potential title contenders cannot afford to lose to such opponents. Tottenham managed to redeem themselves in the League Cup, where they beat Charlton 5-1, but the main plans and aspirations of the Spurs are directed at the Premier League. Newcastle United in the summer parted ways with Eddie Howe, who had been making history for the last forty years. Like Tottenham, this team went into a rebuild due to the departure of three leaders: Tonali, Guimaraes and Gordon. Tonali himself has joined the ranks of Newcastle's upcoming opponent. In the first round of the Premier League, Newcastle at home narrowly beat Liverpool, but in the away match against the wounded beast it will be even harder for them.
