The English Super Cup will traditionally take place at Wembley Stadium in London at the beginning of the new season. However, this year it will feature an 'unconventional' opponent. Crystal Palace had a glorious run in the FA Cup last season, becoming its champion for the first time in its history. The first Premier League opponent on Crystal Palace's path was in the quarter-finals, but Oliver Glasner's team first crushed Fulham 3-0 and then similarly stunned Aston Villa. Finally, in the final match, the London club played the role of the underdog. The football community believed that Manchester City would somewhat redeem themselves for a disappointing season and at least win the FA Cup. However, just 16 minutes into the match, Eze scored the only goal for Crystal Palace, allowing the capital team to become the tournament's champions. Liverpool lifted the main trophy in England for the first time in five years. Until about December of last year, it was unclear which of the trio 'Arsenal - Manchester City - Liverpool' had the best chance for the title; however, subsequently, the Merseysiders pulled ahead significantly and became champions with a 10-point advantage over Arsenal. Bookmakers named the nominal guests as the favourites for the upcoming Super Cup, offering odds of 1.59 on their victory. During the off-season, Crystal Palace's squad underwent almost no changes. The 'long-serving' Schlupp and Holding left the team. As a free agent, Walter Benitez from PSV joined the 'Glaziers', while Borna Sosa was signed from Ajax for a modest €2.3 million. Liverpool, however, saw much more significant changes to their squad. Last season, contracts for Salah and Van Dijk, who form the backbone of the team, were extended. Over the past couple of months, Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremy Frimpong, and Milos Kerkes were acquired. The 'Reds' squad lost Alexander-Arnold, Luis Diaz, Jarell Quansah, and a few other less significant players. The game connections in Liverpool are likely not fully established, which means goals can be expected in the Super Cup from their opponent as well.
