The champion of the Faroe Islands will play away with dignity

Kauno Žalgiris, founded in 2004 in the city of Kaunas, had never been regarded as the strongest team in a country far from football. The previous season was a breakthrough, and for the first time in its history it became the Lithuanian champions. Moreover, the league trophy was clinched not in the final round, which suggests Kauno Žalgiris' high level. However, this is only in comparison with other clubs in the Lithuanian championship. Since 2019, the Kaunas club has not missed a single edition of European competition, but has failed to progress through qualification even once. All matches of the first qualifying rounds in the 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 seasons were lost by the team, and in the subsequent editions of the Conference League it reached no further than the third round. In the current Champions League qualifying, Kauno Žalgiris unexpectedly passed the first round, where they faced the more experienced Drita. In the 81st minute of the return leg, the Lithuanians were on the brink of elimination, but managed to turn the situation around and score two decisive goals. Klaksvík has appeared in the tenth consecutive edition of European competitions and for the seventh time in this period does so as the Faroe Islands' champions. The three most recent qualification campaigns have been more successful for Klaksvík than the preceding ones. In 2023, it was the first time in the history of Faroese football that Klaksvík played in the group stage of the Conference League. In the first round of the current Champions League qualifying, Klaksvík faced the Luxembourg champion Bissen. They managed to defeat the less experienced opponent in both matches with the same score of 2:1. Bookmakers identified the hosts of the upcoming match as favorites, offering odds of 1.73 on their victory. The first leg did not determine a winner. The Faroese side on its home stadium had a clear advantage, but could not convert it into goals. The final edge in shots on target was 7-0 at 0-0, indicating Klaksvík's unrealized potential. Overall, the home-field factor favors Kauno Žalgiris, but the teams are roughly equal in strength. The Lithuanian club in the current national championship has roughly the same number of points as five other clubs, which indicates a decline compared to the previous season. Klaksvík will battle to advance to the next round.
