Strasbourg look to return to the race for European places
In the tenth round of the French league season, Toulouse will host Strasbourg. For both teams, this is a defining match in terms of whether they remain in mid-table or find themselves among those fighting relegation. While such fluctuations have been normal for Toulouse in recent years, Strasbourg are more accustomed to competing for European places or positions in mid-table. Both teams currently have ten points, as do Auxerre. They are just three points behind ninth-placed Lens, with the European places within reach from there. But they are also only three points above the team in the penultimate position. There is therefore a tightly packed group of rivals in pursuit. In their previous match, Toulouse lost 2:0 away to Marseille. Before that, they drew 0:0 with Troyes, beat Le Mans 3:0 and shared the points with Monaco in a 2:2 draw. The trademark inconsistency that has characterised Toulouse in recent years is plain to see. Despite having a decent squad, the team alternate between poor performances and impressive ones. They are an extremely unpredictable side. Strasbourg, meanwhile, produced a strong performance in the last round, beating Auxerre 5:1, but had previously lost consecutive matches to Rennes 3:0, PSG 3:1, Nice 2:1 and Paris FC 2:1. That poor run sent Strasbourg so far down the table. They have the potential to compete for European places, which is most likely what they will be doing at the end of the season. Last season, Toulouse beat Strasbourg twice, 1:0 and 2:1, results that do not really reflect the two teams' final positions.
