Lens finished last season on a high note. How will they start the new campaign?
In the first round match of the French Ligue 1, Lens will play Brest on home soil. The Bloody Golden produced a strong finish to last season and then continued that momentum in pre-season, starting with a 0-0 draw against Paris, before going on to beat Valenciennes (3-0), Rhodes (1-0), Clermont (3-1), Inter (1-0) and finally drew with West Ham (0-0). The level of the last two opponents commands respect for Lance's result. The bold, defiant team maintained that attacking style despite a number of losses in the squad, most notably the departures of Kloss and Doucoure. But interesting newcomers have arrived: Openda, Samba, Samed. With them Lens will be able to maintain the same high level of play. As for Brest, they were not so bright during the pre-season. But in the transfer market they were active, although the balance of selling and buying, perhaps, will keep it at the same level. The emergence of the Moroccan Dari is worth noting, as is the midfielder Lees-Melou from Norwich. But also the departure of Fossurier, Larsonner. Brest beat Avranches (1-0), Lorient (1-0) and Angers (2-0) in pre-season, but lost in the last match to Genham (0-2). The end of last season was sluggish, losing the last three rounds. Lens, on the other hand, were on fire. They scored at least two goals in their last five home games in Ligue 1, they have not lost in eight straight league games and they have always aimed for attacking open play, although that has regularly caused problems in the form of conceded goals. Curiously, Lens lost to Brest in both rounds last season, despite the teams finishing so differently.
