Montpellier and Troyes have had a poor pre-season. Who will be more successful in the opening match?
Montpellier will play Troyes in the first match of the French season on home soil. Both teams played with mixed success last season and found themselves in modest positions at the end of the season. Probably, the task for them this season will also be to consolidate in the middle of the standings, as they are not the weakest clubs in terms of resources, but they are also unlikely to qualify for the European Cup zone. It is striking how poorly both teams have conducted their pre-season preparation. Montpellier lost all five friendlies. At first, they tried to play defensively, but lost to Rodez (0-1), Espanyol (0-2) and Clermont (0-2). Then, they decided to play in a more open and cheerful manner and lost to Toulouse (4-5) and Crystal Palace (2-4). Montpellier's defensive credibility remains poor. Although the Paladins signed two new full-backs this summer, this change could pay dividends, both in attack and defence. Montpellier still have some promising performers in the creative zone, so this team is still capable of showing interesting moves in attack. Troyes have a slightly more modest talent pool. In the last pre-season match they lost to Auxerre (0:1), but before that they crushed Le Havre (3:0), although, earlier they were crushed twice by Metz (0:4) and Toulouse (1:6). For Troyes, too, it can be said that defensive errors dictate the observed style of play. In the last five consecutive Ligue 1 away matches, Troyes have failed to win. But Montpellier have conceded at least two goals in each of their last six Ligue 1 matches. So the opponents are worthy of each other, and if either of them wants to play openly, we're in for a performance of mistakes and goals.
